What is fecal microbiome testing and what are the benefits?
Fecal microbiome testing is the process of sequencing bacterial DNA material from a small fecal sample. We can detect and identify the bacteria in your pet's stool sample and then provide you with a comprehensive report.
Testing your pet's microbiome provides insights into their health. Then, imbalances in specific gut bacteria can be addressed to help alleviate such symptoms as diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and itchy skin that may be associated with some chronic health conditions.
What does a healthy microbiome look like?
A diverse, balanced gut microbiome includes trillions of bacteria and other microbes. Sick pets may have only a few types of bacteria, or may have far too many of some bacteria and not enough of others. Diverse representation is key for good health.
Does a dog going into heat impact the gut microbiome?
Yes, going into heat can have an impact on the gut microbiome. See this paper for more information. https://doi.org/10.3390/biology11111683
Do you have tips on pilling a dog?
Most people find that hiding the capsules in food or a treat is helpful. Some foods that seem particularly effective are lunchmeat, cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, plain yogurt, butter, peanut butter, hamburger meat, hot dogs, canned fish (the smellier the better!), canned cat food, and bread. Of course, if your dog cannot tolerate any of these suggestions, we do not recommend them.
Some discerning dogs will eat around even the tastiest of treats. In these cases, pilling the dog by hand is another option. Coating the pill with a small amount of butter can help it go down more easily. One last technique that can be helpful is preparing three treats, one with the pill hidden inside. Give the first treat, then quickly give the one with the pill inside. Quickly follow up by giving the third treat to seal the deal.
